My daughter is having a problem with her 1989 325i. The blower switch no longer has the 4 or 5 speed options, its the highest speed or off, nothing in between. I have heard that the multi-position switch is actually not the culprit but rather a resistor board. I have also heard that the board is accessable only from the engine bay, through a removable cover. I originally was under the impression that the multi-position switch was nothing more than a rheostat. With the car 300 miles away at college, I'd like to have the parts on hand to fix this thing during the Thanksgiving holidays. I sure would appreciate any enlightenment on this problem. Is it the switch or is it a resistor board? Is anyone familiar with the degree of difficulty?

Thanks

its probably the resistor, which is located in the left hand side of the passenger foot well as i recall. its pretty easy to access should it be in the area mentioned.

It is the resistor that is bad, but this is absolutely NOT where it is located.

The fan switch in the car is not a rheostat - it is just a simple switch. You need to replace the resistor board - it is located adjacent to the blower motor and is accessed through the blower motor cover on the firewall from the engine compartment. Here's a writeup with some pictures. It's an easy job.
