I had my smog pump replaced 6/05 and now the mechanic is telling me it needs to replaced again. After I showed the invoice from 6/05, he stated that the smog pump only lasts about 12 months. I took it in because the check engine light came on. Has anyone experienced replacing the smog pump that often?

Smog pump? CEL goes on for emissions; I'm not sure what the smog pump is, however, anything part of the emission system that you are being told needs to be replaced every 12 months, is probably false. I cannot think of a single thing on that system that needs to be changed every year, unless you drive +100K miles within those 12 months.

I think the mechanic is ripping you off. Ask him for the code, assuming he pulled it, and place it up here and I'm sure other members could offer suggestions on diagnosing the problem.

Good Luck (and run)

Bummer for Bimmer

The smog pump as he calls it is the secondary air pump. I had 1300 miles on the vehicle since he replaced the last one. I made him give me the part he replaced and the box the new one came in. I didn't think that sounded right. I live in a small town and there is no BMW dealership here. He is the only mechanic in town with a computer to run diagnostics. The part he gave me is in a box with Pierburg written all over it. I don't see BMW anywhere. Do you think he is getting inferior parts? [mad]

A replacement may not have BMW on the box, that's OK. Many of the parts on the car are not really made by BMW.

But a smog pump DOES NOT need replacing every 12 months. Maybe every 12 YEARS but not months. He is either ripping you, or he is a really bad mechanic. It's possible that the computer is reporting a smog pump RELATED problem, and he is unable to find the true problem.
