Hi,
I have a problem with my 1996 BMW 540i,
The diagnostic system will not comunicate to any equipment not even the factory tool, I't won't talk to any of the systems in the vehicle, eg: AirBag,ABS, Engine management, Air con, or even the dash cluster,

Has anyone ever come across this before? Or can anyone offer some advise o this problem,

Thanks

Hello, I am an automotive mechanic but don't have much experience with BMW's. I am just getting some experience with the way they are laid out, but am still quite green with them. However, I have experienced this problem on other vehicles. In most cases the problem is simply a fuse but it is easy to overlook in some cases because there are more than one fuse to the controller (control module, brain, etc.). In a very few cases the problem is a broken wire or a loose connector somewhere. And the rest are usually a bad controller. So first look at all the fuses (including any that may be under the hood). After that, a reputable shop should be able to diagnose the problem without having to commit to a repair. But, again, I am not familiar with these systems.

If you have the M60 engine check fuses # 2, 12, 17, 23. If you have the M50 engine check # 12, 17, 23. they all fuse the engine control system (DME) does the vehicle start?

thanks Guys, i have checked all the fuses, and also checked all the wires to where the all go. there is no!! wiring problem, no1 seems to know how the system works and which control unit is most likly to be the problem, i don't want to just go ahead and replace parts, two reasons one is the cost and the other, i don't get the satisfaction of know exactly what the problem is,
