BMW M-Series Roadster Tops List of Thieves Favorites

The 2001 BMW M-Series Roadster, which was stolen at a rate of one for every 200 on the road, led the list of most stolen cars in 2005, the Associated Press reported, citing statistics from the CCC Information Services Inc. of Chicago, an industry group that tracks theft and vehicle damage.

However, small cars that can be chopped into parts and sold for use by street racers dominated the list of the most-stolen autos in the United States last year. Six of the top 10 were models of the Acura Integra, which is a favorite of street racers, said Jeanene O'Brien, who analyzes the data for CCC.

CCC Information's list of the most-stolen vehicles in 2005 compares loss claims to the total number of registered vehicles.

The only reason why it's on that list is because of its rarity. There are roughly 5,000 M roadsters registered in the U.S., which is far fewer than any of those listed cars, especially the Acuras. Perfect example of statistics misleading the public. The last I heard, the only way to steal a newer BMW was by towing it away or with dealership-kind key technology.

So lets see 1 for every 200 is 5 to 1000, by 5 is roughly 25 stolen roadsters in 2005, now thats a lot. I'd rest easy...

Definately watch where you park and install a good theft deterent system... though the thieves get past them in seconds...
