I'm thinking of paying up to $12k for a used Z3; it's a car I've been looking at for a while now. But, I've heard that BMWs are really expensive to maintain (especially since I'll probably end up with a 96 or 97, so no warranties), so I'm having second thoughts. Can all you Z3 owners post your exeriences with your car, maybe pursuade me to go ahead or not buy the Z3?

I just purchased a 1998 Z3 2.8L 5 speed with 61,700 miles on it. I got it on eBay for $13,600 and it looks and drives like a new car! I'm very excited about it, but I'm in the same boat as you...I'm wanting to talk to people who've had one for a few years. I like to do preventive maintenance and want to know any specific idiosyncracies this model may have.
I'd appreciate hearing about any of the responses you get.

BMW's are only expensive to maintain if something severe develops. I have owned five BMW's and the single most expensive thing I had to do was replace the drive line in the 750iL, $1400.00 parts and labor. Neither of my Z3's experienced any trouble, other than the typical minor things listed on Esmeralda's Fix It Page site. My 381is was trouble free, and my 84 733i went over 200k with no major expense. I change my own oil, I use Mobil One and Mahle or Mann filters. I have Redline synthetics in the transmission and diff. I use ATE's Super Blue brake fluid and BMW coolant. They great cars if you take care of them.

im getting a 1999 z3 2.3 tomorrow with 55k miles. it might not be a z4 but it is one beautiful car. In fact, i actually like the way the z3 looks much more than the z4

I recently purchased a '98 Atlanta Blue 2.8L 5spd on eBay and paid $13,600. The previous owner maintained it exactly how BMW recommended. It is in "cherry" condition (62,000 miles). So far, there have been no problems. It needed new tires and an oil change. It is a great car.
