Aloha all, I just wanted to get your opinion on brake job prices. I inquired to my service advisor this morning about the cost of a 4 wheel brake job. He told me they usually need replacing between 20-30K depending on driving habits. He said a 4 wheel brake job was $1145 which included new pads, new rotors and new brake sensors. I ask him why not just turn the rotors and he said they don't do that any more they recommend just to replace the rotors because of the tolerances that turning them is not recommended.

Is he blowing smoke up my ass? I don't need the brakes yet I was there for another reason and just happened to ask. I'm thinking maybe I need to find a good independent and avoid the dealer if possible. Thoughts?

Aloha and Mahalo, chieftd

It is a general practice NOT to turn BMW brake rotors, they are telling you the truth.

If you are mechanical you could do a brake job on a BMW yourself, it is fairly easy and tons less expensive.

Plus, the rotors may not even need to be turned or replaced. If they aren't warped (ie, you don't have vibrations upon applying the brakes), you can take them to Autozone to have the thickness checked (or your auto mechanic can check the thickness). If the thickness is within spec and the rotors are otherwise fine, then they probably don't need to be replaced.

However, I agree - if you can do the job yourself, you'll save tons.
