brake light (instrument panel) won't go off

I have a 2002 525i. On the instrument panel, the "brake" light and the "check brake lining" light will not turn off. I have recently replaced the front and rear pads. After this (according to the manual), the lights should turn off by themselves. Unfortunately they do not. Any ideas on how to get these to turn off aside from taking the car to the dealer?
