i was wondering that since the idrive system is standard on the new 5 series, thus allowing for a screen on the car already, can a gps navigation system be installed later on... or does it have to be ordered when initially purchasing the car??? thanks...

Usually, it has to come with the car when you order it. Your best bet is to just go to your BMW dealership and find out for yourself...don't call up the service department, that makes it real easy for them to say no.

The screens in the cars that are on the lots now are smaller than the ones that will come with nav. The portion of dash around and below the screen are different as well. BMW has said they will not make a retro kit and even if they do come out with one later it will be very expensive. Some dealers are claiming that because production from Nov 03 on will have the harness installed at the factory that the car will be retro-able. Don't believe it. BMW has no idea how its going to make the nav work as a factory installed option let alone do a retro. I spoke with BMW about this a week ago and they told me they don't even have anyone working on a retro. My take is if a dealer is claiming a retro will be available then get it in writing WITH a price.

cool... thanks all... reason that i am asking is because i am waiting for the new 3 series to come out... and i am assuming that idrive will be coming on it too, since that seems to be bmw's direction... the only problem is that i can't really afford the nav system but would like to own it later on... anyways, thanks again... i guess we will just have to wait and see....

Granted, it's not an in-dash unit, & the screen is samll, but my new Gsrmin 2610 is pretty cool.

It's a GPS nav system that sits on the dash or windshield mounts. The audio directions are pretty good & the re-routing works great if you decide to get off-route.

At about $735, it's about a thousand bucks less than the DVD system that MIGHT come, & works fine.
