My mechanic advised me that if I replaced my cats with a oem product(cat), that there is a 50% chance it want solve my problem with the engine light. I Replaced both 02 sensors already, I know that the cats are bad. He said the original Germany Cats are the ones I need without any problems, are there any comments on this subject?

I replaced my MAF (used) and I haven't had the check engine light come back on or any hesitation/sputtering since. Maybe you should take a look at that.

My cat needs changing but only because of emissions.

Similar problem on a 1997 528i...was told to replace the cats...I put a bottle of "Gauranteed to Pass" i nthe gas tank (essentially a fuel injector cleaner) and it hasn't gone back on yet.

Is your a e39 528i; from what I understand this is a common problem; the code that trips suggests that it could be o2 sensor, cat or just build up. I would hope your mechanic tried some sort of cleaner first (I heard that Guaranteed to pass was the best, so I used it), before doing the o2 sensors. If not, try it, and then talk about the replacing the cats. The cleaner will be less than $10, whereas cats well over $1000.

Good Luck

I put universal fit thunder hi-flow convertors on the car, already had the 02 sensors replaced. Light still went on and off, especially at first in the morning start up it would idle bad until a certain temp with the light on, when the light went off after about 5 miles no bad idle. Took the car to a 3rd shop in the Tampa Bay area which is 40 miles away, had the car scaned and it showed the 02 sensors and the mass air sensors. The guy sprayed brake cleaner around the throttle body and the car rpm dropped. Diagnosis was determined that throttle body is leaking, needs to be resealed. Still have to wait a week to have repairs done, due to heavy shop load and the holidays.
