Charging System Failure

My battery has recently died three times in the last month & a half.
After the first occasion I noticed that there was foamy battery acid residue around the battery. This battery was approx 1 year old, but someone had thought perhaps it was faulty & told me to replace it.
I've now had the new battery for 1 month and I came out to my car the other day & again - dead battery. I charged it, took my car in and the mechanic did a basic inspection, not finding anything immediately apparent with the charging system. He charged the battery, changed the spark plugs, tightened the alternator belt and sent me on my way.
Like I said, things have worked fine for a month. This last week, my car begin having trouble starting in the mornings, low/sluggish battery starting sounds. And again, my battery died!
Along with this my temperature gauge occasionally showed me that the engine temperature was getting too high after driving it for only 1/2 hour or so, often moving close to the red.
Also, my heater started having problems. Normally my heater will heat up quickly, now it was barely working. My car finally ended up overheating two days ago.
People have been telling me that it could be the voltage regulator in regards to the battery problem, and with the temperature guage I've had people say that I need a new thermostat or that perhaps I am not using the correct mix of antifreeze and that the thermostat is not the problem. How does the heater problem relate to all of this? HELP!!

I doubt that the heater problem and the battery problem are directly related.

Check your fluid level, everything you describe sounds like low antifreeze level - overheating, no heat from the heater.

The battery charging issue does sound like a charging problem, either the voltage regulator and/or alternator failure. I do not know much about the E30 electrical system, perhaps others can help with specific details.
