JC Conforti Chip, cold air intake WITH heat shield (w/out heat shield and its worthless), adjust the timing (that M42 engine's timing is adjustable 12 degree's w/out other modifications), replace all the sensors, use a lighter weight oil, make sure your spark plugs and air filter are new/clean, etc.

There is no such thing as cheap power.... but you can spend money on little stuff and gain back the power that SHOULD be there already.

Yeah, especially now that some "experts" are now predicting gas to go to $4.00 a gallon because of Katrina.....

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Consumers can expect retail gas prices to rise to $4 a gallon soon, but whether they stay there depends on the long-term damage to oil facilities from Hurricane Katrina, oil and gas analysts said Wednesday.

"There's no question gas will hit $4 a gallon," Ben Brockwell, director of pricing at the Oil Price Information Service, said. "The question is how high will it go and how long will it last?"

OPIS tracks wholesale and retail oil prices and provides pricing information for AAA's daily reports on fuel prices.

Brockwell said with gasoline prices now exceeding $3 a gallon before even reaching the wholesale level, it "doesn't take a genius" to expect retail prices to hit $4 a gallon soon.

"Consumers haven't seen the worst of it yet," Brockwell said.

He expects consumers in the Southeast and Northeast to be pinched first, following the impact of Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast region.

Ughh, UGI is my gas supplier.

But I'm prepared. I have a wood pellet stove and a wood burning insert in my fireplace. I've got a cord of firewood well seasoned, and my boss has a 40 acre farm with plenty of deadfall trees ready to cut. He usually has a wood cutting party in October or November for employees. All you can cut, all you can haul.

Sorry I guess I hijacked this thread.....

Eh he got the info he needed [:)]

We have UGI too. Our house heats up VERY fast and stays pretty hot, in fact sometimes during the winter i end up opening my bedroom window. Combination of comptuer, tv, and heater (even with vent closed) gets to be too much!

We were thinking of installing a pellet stove a long time ago, but who knows.

I think I Have gotten all of the origional power back already. I have a new 02 sensor, Mobil1 synthetic oil, Royal Purple synthetic diff and tranny oil, new timing chain tensioner, new radiator/ thermo/ water pump, all new radiator hoses, all new vacuum lines, new manifold gaskets, honed intake manifold, heat wraped headers, heat wraped exhaust up to the cat, short ram intake, high flow magna-flow cat, removed resonator, and soon to come new fuel pressure reg and injectors.

How do you like your 3.91 LS diff? My dad just bought one for his 91' 318is, but we havent installed it yet.
Um, it's a little long on the final drive isn't it? I don't think the M42 has the balls to pull that ratio. Standard diff ratio for the 318is was 4.10...

Thats what I told him but he didn't believe me. And on top of that, he wants to put taller tires on also.
both ideas will make it slower............. has your dad worked on a car ever?

Yea, hes great at it, hes the one who taught me. He was saying that he wanted the new diff for gas mileage and to lengthin first gear, and hes not gonna be racing it, he drives it like an old man, so he thinks it will be ok for what hes doing, which it probably will be no that I've thought about it.

I still bet he's going to get worse gas mileage!!! The car came with the 4.10 for multiple reasons, including fuel mileage. That 4 cylinder will have to work HARDER now.

I agree with Eric. I think the only time it will have improved mileage is on the freeway at high speeds. But even then, the M42 aint going to be able to pull 5th gear up ANY sort of incline with that final drive, thus requiring a lower gear and higher revs. The engineers at BMW put that 4.10 diff in for a reason. On mine at 100km/h the revs sit just below 3K so I'm just getting into the meat of the torque. This is what you want. The guys at BMW choose these ratios for a reason!

I agree with you that it will have to work harder to get up to speed, but once he gets up to speed it will be fine, but I also agree with you that it wont have the responsiveness at higher speeds. Most of the miles he puts on his car are highway miles. As soon as we get it in, I'll post the before and after mpg results

But here's the problem - say the engine is most efficient between 3000 rpm and 4000 rpm when it comes to gas being used, and the power being produced. Your stock differential is at the correct ratio to really make that as efficient as possible with still having SOME kind of acceleration. A 3.91 won't be a huge difference, but I still think you're going to be dumping more gas into those cylinders, but at lower rpm's, to keep a constant speed. Hence the decreased gas mileage.
