So, I've turned my 90 525i into a daily commuter...shame on me! Last night I got the check engine light ~ 60mph....I pushed it up to 80 to give it a chance to "take a deep breath"...today however the light comes on again, I switch lanes to slow down and its as if the car was stalling.....when I press the accelerator it doesn't seem to move.

Usually when I hit 60, I get the "shimmy" until it approaches 70mph....I thought that was normal, but it seems that I have to drive at 80 to get a smoother ride.... I finally got home, but is a hose clogged, do I need a new air filter, am I using the wrong gas???? I'm desperate...Need Help Now!!!!

The shimmy is normal - if your suspension is worn. You need to replace the front control arms and trailing arms.

To figure out the check engine light, turn the key to the 2nd position (Run, the position the key is in when the car is on). Let all the dings stop and lights turn off on the dash that normally turn off, then push the gas pedal to full throttle and let off completely, 5 times in a row. Count the flashes - It should be in a sequence. Post that sequence and someone here will be able to tell you what's wrong.

Thanks for the info. The problem looks to be the air flow meter....geesh...does anything other than the oil filter cost less than $300????? Oh how I love it. Slight vacuum leak also, but thats just a hose.....thank goodness..

Happy Beeming!

By the way - I said trailing arms - What I ment was thrust arms.

I dont understand your complaint about part costs. Between my two BMW's, the only parts I've spent NEAR $300 on were a set of bilstein HD shocks, a complete clutch kit, and a freshly rebuilt steering rack... but I paid more like $200 for these things. Most parts for BMW's are cheap if you don't go to the dealer.

I just bought a cheapo front suspension kit on ebay for $250. Sure it'll only last 2 or 3 years, but I plan on redoing the whole suspension before then anyways.

I figured as much. I had the tires replaced Saturday and an alignment done, so just like my E30 its time to replace the rocker arms/assembly. Sometimes I feel like a motherless child.!!!! BTW, the pic is beautiful.

Oh, didn't see the rest of your message. Maybe I'm living on another planet. I know hoses don't cost that much =). Seriously, I'm ranting now, just because everything that I've done this month has cost too much.......I have to replace the Air Mass Meter (like now)......and I haven't seen one thats under $200 yet....and trust....me and the dealer stay far away from one another.......
