has anybody found a way to make a cold air intake for an e30 that doesn't involve removing the high beam? i was thinking it would be ingenius to make one using the front side brake ducts as a way to lead the cold air to the filter, but the wheel well won't allow it. i was also thinking that i could secure a hose with cable ties to the plastic guard next to the oil pan on the bottom of the car. however, there's no room to manuver a hose to the filter because the k/n cone filter is so big. can anyone help me? thanks

Here is what I want to do when I get a cold air intake. But take into mind that I am going to install a M30 AFM so things may be a little different.

In my car I have to deal with the ABS unit right behind the headlight. I was looking on Ebay for a cone filter for my car and decided to get I think they were called Ractive cone filter or something like that. The cone filter only pulls air from the front on it, it has heat shields completly around the circumference(spelling) of the filter. I was going to get one to fit the M30 AFM and then run a pipe from the open end of the filter to the hole in the plastic guard behind the headlight that was originally going into the factory air box. This way it wont suck any hot air from the radiator, only cold air from the front of the air. It wont do ram air, but in my opinion ram air doesnt do much unless you are going relaly fast, like 150 mph +.

Here is a link to one of these filters on ebay so you can see what I am talking about exactly

well i have a k/n cone filter..but where would the cold air come from..the headlights are in the way. i mean, i could even take off both plastic pieces so that the back of the headlights are exposed, but no air can come in from the front. that's my dilema. "where the **** am i gonna get cold air"

where does the filter end up? i can't find a place to put it on my car. i'm also worried about water in the filter, and what that may do to the engine. also, how did he get the piping to go through the chassis like that? was there already a hole, or did he make one? thanks

so i built a custom cold air intake for 15 bucks. and about 2 hours of labor (enjoyed almost every minute of it). used that example that autoxfreak provided. just used flexible air duct tubing and a rubber adapter. the k/n cone filter now suspends about 4 to 5 inches from the ground next to the oil pan. only problem was suspending the airflow meter in a fashion that wouldn't destroy the pre-manifold tubes. thank god for cable-ties. now, the question is...how much do i need to worry about rain? i do live in seattle
