Okay. I was talking to a friend of mine online, when all of a sudden AOL turned its self off. I tried to restart it, but when I hit 'Sign On', the computer froze. I turned it off, and waited a couple of seconds. I turned it back on. A blue screen comes up and text quickly scrolls down.
"Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The reguistry cannot load the hive (file):
\systemroot\system32\config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writeable.

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance."

WTF?!? Help!!! Every time I try to start the computer, it gets to that screen and it stays there until I turn it off. What should I do? btw, I'm on a different computer now.

I have three safe mode options. 'Safe Mode' (didn't work), 'Safe Mode with Netowrking', and 'Safe Mode with Command Prompt' (haven't tried). I' guess I'll try both of the other two. Anybody else have some sugestions or websites that could help?

Try going into safe mode and uninstalling AOL. See if it continues to freeze, if it doesn't then reinstall the software. If you are using dialup and AOL is your provider, make sure you have a copy on hand. Also if your computer is old, its probably cheaper just to get a new one then upgrading it yourself.

Your registry is corrupted, probably by a virus but maybe not.

Here's Microsoft's answer:

I doubt you have bad RAM, but it's possible. The physical memory dump is a process MS uses for debuging. A file is created (mini.dmp, system.dmp, etc.) with all the data in memory at the time of the crash. Unless you can read machine language, it's pretty much useless and once you get the system back you should delete these files (*.dmp).

uninstall AOL, and never ever EVER install it again. also, and it looks like wileycoyote has already done this, take that registry error and search around, even on like google or something to figure out what it means. I would say its a virus if i had to guess.

what operating system do you have. If you have an older one you may have to make the registry size larger. Otherwise uninstalling and re-installing should do the trick. Or there may possibly be a "fix" option when you go to uninstall it in add/remove programs.

I agree, see if you can uninstall it from Safe Mode and reinstalling. This will be your best hope. Rebuilding Registry Stacks (unless you backed up the whole registry lately) is not easy, very time consuming, and your computer will probably never run the same again unless you reinstall all your software as before. Especially if you have upgraded software instead of full version software. The order of some of those installs will matter as well. Your best bet, if possible, is to redo the system if reinstalling AOL (ouch) does not work. If Safe Mode is not an option or does not work you can do if from DOS with a boot disk as well.

True, but if you build it yourself you can really make it like you want. I build all my systems and all though it may be more expensive my systems are very sweet. Not to say you cannot buy a very very nice system; you can, but I have always enjoyed building, tweaking, overclocking, and fine-tuning computers. I am playing around with water cooling now.

I can't believe the prices of systems today. Unbelievable.

Thanks for all the help guys. After a long time on the phone with a Dell person my Mom kinda fixed it. We basically had to reinstall everything, but I had almost all of my files backed up so it's okay. The weirdest thing is that I tried to use the other computer this morning and the screen was really messed up. It's like the computer gods are against me....
