hi, i have a 91 318is and i was thinking about converting to a cone air filter. has anyone here done it and/or know if it requires anything more then the adapter? and where i could get a heat shield? and i heard soemthing about a temp sensor somewhere around there that needs to be moved or soemthing...
and is it actually worth it to switch to a cone filter (K&N?)?

Worth it to switch it to a cone filter, not really. You're removing the factory airbox which can actually trap air and force it evenly through the filter. The airbox also shields the incoming air from the heat thrown off b the engine. Unless you plan to make a shield around your filter (like a box) and duct it to the outside of the car, you will more than likely lose power over the factory airbox.

If you really are looking for gains, the only realistic choice would be to upgrade to a MAF. Otherwise, look into chips and other items, but I really think the 'cone filter' thing is really a joke - especially because few people do it correctly. If you duct it and seal it from the engine compartment, you might actually see 1-3hp.

Here is an example of what I mean by "sealing":

BTW, no ones markets these for e30s (that I'm aware of), so be creative ;)

The Best thing to do is make the heat shield that covers the entire cone even the top and take the ducting from the front behind the head light and extend it into the heat shield with a small hole. Then the maximum amount of cool air is getting to the filter and the maximum amout of heat is being shielded from the air thus making it cooler and denser. The airbox is in most cases better than the cone, but if the cone is installed properly with heat shield it works better than the airbox. The best option is Direct Induction when the Ducting is connecteed directly to the cone that is housed in a special holder. Can be seen at www.rgmotorsport.com
