Connecting Rod Bearings?

Has anyone else gotten a letter from BMW stating that your connecting rod bearings were not manufactured to BMW quality standards and they need to be replaced?

How much of the engine needs to be torn down to replace the bearings? Is this something that's only going to lead to more problems?

Well, I hope this does not lead to more problems. I just had it done last week. I have an 03 M3 Coupe manufactured on 5/13/03. They have to lower the front axle about 10mm, and remove the oil pan to access the rods. The bottom of each rod has to be carefully removed inorder to remove and replace the bearings. Then, everything needs to be reassembled and torqued to specs. The DME software was updated with a rev limiter for "free" reving (i.e., not in gear), and the engine oil needs to be hotter before the orange lights on your tach are extinguished. You have to also observe a 1200 mile breakin period where you cannot rev the engine past 5500 rpm, and cannot exceed 105 miles per hour.

I have already had the service done. I had the scheduled the service before I received the letter. One week after I got the service done the letter arrived. I haven't had any problems so far. The car seems to be running fine. Keeping it under 5500 RPM is hard to do though. Here is a link to my post:

I asked the Service Manager a few questions.

They should. Remember, just because you haven't received the letter don't worry. They are coming and you will get one. Some dealers have a 3-month waiting list to get the repairs done. You can call your BMW dealer as they will/can check for you. They love the business, because BMWNA picks up the check. They see it as easy guaranteed money. I would call, because they could squeeze you in like they did me.....

According to the documents in this thread...

(Q3) Which models are affected?

(A3) BMW M3 Coupe/Convertible equipped with S54 engines and produced between February 12, 2001 and May 22, 2003.

Seems like your 06/03 is not in the group.

Thanks vlad. Post # 6 stated the same thing. He doesn't have too much to worry about. He can check to see if the car is on the list for some unknown reason......

BTW: What is the new free-revving RPM limit? And are you certain the 8000 RPM limit has not changed when the car is in gear (in other words, have you been able to hit 8000 since the service was done)?

Yes...just had mine done Mon-Thurs at BMW Arlington

They had to order a part so it took more than two days estimated. I also had the iPod input installed. They didn't tell me which part they ordered so I dunno if the iPod input device was what had to be ordered but I wouldn't be surprised. Irritating the question wasn't answered.

Car doesn't seem to be any different than before (I had about 7200 miles on it) although I haven't had it above 4500 rpm yet.

A second irritation is they didn't have anything to say about the recall, no backbrief on what BMW says you're supposed to do. Sometimes dealers assume you know what's going on from the few words you say to the service writer but IMHO on a recall/service campaign like this one they need to make SURE you understand not to exceed 5500 rpm for 1200 miles and anything else (what, no full throttle? Easy..just turn off the traction control!! [thumb] )

Connecting rods on backorder

I waited 6 weeks to get my M3 in for the recall. Then after 2 days in the shop, they call and tell me the parts are on back order and they can't do the work. Anyone else have this happen to them?

I made my appointment for Dec 20th. I explained about the letter I received. Seems they already knew about it before I mentioned it. I'll be bringing the letter with me. Anything I should remember to tell them or ask them to do?
