Cost of Oil Change

This is a spin-off of the oil consumption thread. I've decided that @ 15K miles is just way too long to wait for an oil change. So, I decided to find out how much it would cost to:
a) change the oil myself
b) have the dealership change it

Put it this way, I spent $90 for everything plus a new drain pan that will hold the near 7 quars of oil. Add on $20 for plenty of beer [drinking] and I'm still coming in under budget.

The dealership (peterpan BMW) wanted $298 for an oil change [rofl] They must think we can't spin a wrench (or don't want to).

$298 for an oil change?!?!?! A do-it-yourself oil change on a BMW should cost no more than $50. if you go to a mechanic to do it it may be a lil bit more just for profit purposes, but not $248.

Actually, for an M, you're looking at @ $8-9 per quart of oil and another ~$8 for filter. If you know somewhere I can get the oil cheaper (castrol-syn 10w60), I'm open to suggestions.[:)]

That $298 price was given by the dealer.

Make sure you use the same brand all the time. Also make sure you use the EXACT same filter as what's on the car.... because if you don't and there's an engine problem, the dealer will probably be you-know-what's and say they won't replace whatever under warranty becuase you changed the oil with the wrong brand filter.

Yea, it's not true that the brand itself would make a big difference (Unless you use a fram)... but that's how dealers are [:(]

Anyways, It's nice to see an M owner who doesn't mind getting his hands a little dirty. Just make sure you don't drink too much of that beer, or you'll wake up in the morning and you'll see valves laying in the middle of your garage [rofl]

Yup, that's what I did. I ordered the stuff from Bavauto.com

Beer wise, I'll pace myself; I'll have one for every quart I have to add (7).

Totally agree with gpoints. I've gotten quotes from Fremont BMW for an Synthetic M3 oil change for $99. Sometimes they have coupons and drop it down to $79.

Thank you very much for posting the Fremont BMW Tip. That place is close enough and for that price I may have them do the next one. [cheers]

Just make sure you tell them to not to wash your car. My oil temp was way up, and I got an extra 5mi in my odometer. The car was not even dry. Putting 1 and 1 together, I figure the car wash kid took my car for a 5mi test drive to dry off the water.
