My mechanic told me that the CV joints need replaced on the rear axle. The car is at home in the shop (a very small town) and I am attending college in a larger city. The mechanic suggested that I purchase the parts and bring them to him next time I come home, being as he is having trouble with his BMW parts supplier.
When I called the BMW dealer parts department I was told that it isn't possible to replace the CV joints. Instead, they said that I must replace the half-axle, which runs over $300. If both CV joints are bad, I have to repalce both half-axles.
Does this sound right? Is it really not possible to replace the CV joints?
