Differential Addivite Question

Unofficialbmw has a post

"All of the BMW dealerships usea GM additive called "Goodwrench Limited Slip Differential Additive", #1052358. It costs about $6.00 and works great. My differential developed grumbling sounds while using Red Line. This additive and straight gear oil solved the problem immediately."

I'm planning on buying redline gear oil for both the tranny and differential -- my question is should I get the redline for the differential and get this additive to put in it?

My dif. has mobile 1 synth gear oil in right now, and it makes a grumbling sound while making slow turns after it's been driven a little (AKA warm).

Anyone else use redline with the additive? I've heard of it before I read it there, just want to make sure.

BTW Please don't tell me to check the fuses [:D]

Dude, you need to check fuse #14 - it's been known to cause grumbling in the rear end.

I'd probably just go ahead and put the additive in with the redline oil - from that other post, it sounds like it will need it anyways. At the least, it isn't going to hurt anything to use it.

I just got some Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil this afternoon to replace my diff oil, but I got the wrong size allen key, so that job will be postponed for a little while. Unfortunately, I don't have to worry about the limited slip additive since I don't have a limited slip rearend. [:(!]

Thanks. I'll check the fuse when I get home [rofl]

I think I'm just going to get the additive and see what happens. Worse that could happen is total failure, which isn't bad, I mean they only cost like $600 [;)]

wait a sec... theres an additive that BMW reccomends to quite the grumbling?
i have cheap gear lube in my LSD and mine grumbles in the same manner you describe. So where can i get this stuff?

Any gm dealer that sells/sold cars that have a posi rear end. Chevy and pontiac are the 2 most likely. I'd go with a pontiac dealer first.

I have been using redline gear oil in my differential for almost a year now with NO additive and my diff does not make any grumbling noise whatsoever. My is a limited slip also. On the back of the redline label it says limited slip additive is not needed. I think I am using the GT-90 oil, if thats what it was called. It was a year ago when I put it in and all my extra courts of oil are back at my fathers shop 3 hours away, so I cannot be certain that is the redline oil that I am using currently.

I am not big on GM products, never have been. So I will not use there limited slip additive. This is just my opinion, not trying to bash GM products... so please dont harp on me. I will stick with redline oil with no additives.

See, this is what I would expect from the redline oil. I know that it says it is for use in limited slip rearends, so I would not expect that you would have to add limited slip additive to it. Maybe these people with grumbling differentials have worn out limited slip clutch packs, and the additional limited slip additive is just masking the problem.

By the way, there's nothing wrong with the GM limited slip additive if you really want to use it, but I'm sure it's probably no different or better/worse than the stuff you can get at your local autoparts store.

The problem is the redline is almost TOO slippery for the older posi final drives.

I dont have a reason to NOT trust a GM additive...(exception being their orange dexcool antifreeze that is KNOWN to be corrosive to aluminum parts.... and they use aluminum heads on their engines [poke] [poke] [poke])
