My 1991 525i needs coolant top-up about every 1,500km. I checked for leaks but found none. Am I burning coolant? If so, what is the cause? Solution? Thanks in advance.

tigers77, easy now, if your burning coolant my first thought might be the head gasket, but without more information I can't say. Give us a little more details about the car and the problem, mileage, does it use oil, how clean does it burn, does your exhaust smoke have any color to it, any smells. How well does it run, when was the last tune-up? Things like this. Thanks dude!

Thanks for the reading lpquick! I'll check those things tonight.

But getting back to your first post, here are more details:

- current mileage = 244,000km.
- need to add a litre of oil approx. every 1,000+km.
- last tune-up was in April 2004. At that time the coolant level warning light kept appearing but the level was ok. Replaced the coolant sensor, warning went away for about a month but came back.
- haven't noticed colour or odour of the exhaust but I'll check.
- runs great otherwise.

Thanks for all your help!

tigers77, I'm alittle confused about your post(s). You say in the 1st post that you need to add coolant about every 900M. In your 2nd post you say the light came on but the level was OK! Is there any evidence of coolant under the car after parking it over night? If not, how about driving it for 10 min or so to get everything up to temp then parking it, leaving it running for about 15 min to see if any coolant leaks then. I'm trying to determine if you have a pin size leak from one of your coolant hoses which migh not leak during a pressure test or when the vehicle is cold, but will show itself after the vehicle has been running for a while. Let me know what you find out?
