Disposal of oil

I was wondering what was the best way to dispose of used engine oil? I want to change the oil in my E30 but i don't want to do the wrong thing by the environment... [scratch] Also, how long should it take for the sump to completely drain (remember that my E30 is a 4-cyl)?

Thanks.

A lot of our auto parts stores here will take used oil to recycle, either that or some of the quick lube places. I usually remove the drain plug, then while I change the filter, wipe off the dip stick and cap the oil is draining (drains faster if it is warm and should be when changed). By the time I am done with this the oil has quit draining.

Please don't dump it on the ground, pour it down a drain or put it in the garbage so that it goes to a landfill. It's unbelievalbe what many people do when recycling is so beneficial and relatively easy. Auto stores, quick lube stores, auto repair shops, even some marinas will accept or have a place to put used oil. Sears Automotive Centers probably have one if you guys have Sears stores. Don't mix it with other fluids (brake, power steering, etc.) and you should be all right. Thanks for being concerned.

Here's the BEST thing to do.... it's what I do.

Find a local (or nearby) farmer who heats his barn using oil heat. A lot of times they will accept the oil, and even have a tank you can pour your oil in. It has to be oil ONLY though. They have a system that simply filters the oil and then burns it to heat the barns.

Option #2
Give your local waste management a call and ask where to take it. They will recycle it for you... filter it out... probably sell it to a trucking company or again, a oil-heat company.

Option #3
Do what Dan said, and take it to an auto parts store - most of the time they will take it for free. (Or ask a mechanic what he does with the old oil).

I never even thought of that [scratch]. I have a neighbour down at our property who heats his shed this way [:)]... Cheers mate!
