On an 87 model? You may be right, but that would be news to me.
As far as I know, all of the I's and IS's had OBD. The ETAs didn't have OBD. In fact, my '87 325e actually has the Check Engine light in the gauge cluster since it was the same cluster as the 325i with a lower RPM redline tach, but since it is an ETA, it doesn't have a bulb behind it.

Justin, your 87 does not have the ligth bulb? Hmm.... thought mine did. Maybe I am thinking of the check light that always comes on before I touch the brakes.

Our cars should be the same, Mine is just a base model 87 325. For base model I have just about everything exept cruise. Oh and no trip computer... the one that calculates the miles tell empty and stuff like that.

Aaron, actually I do have the bulb in the cluster behind the check engine light, but it's not connected to anything in the computer. I just said it that way earlier to clarify that all 87s had Check Engine lights in their clusters, but they just don't function in the ETA cars. Non-ETA six cylinder cars in 87 had functioning Check Engine lights/OBD.

My Anti-lock warning light actually burned out and I swapped the check engine bulb with it to fix it since it clearly isn't being used.
