I own a 97 5281 and bought it used. When I press the window switch it sometimes work and sometimes it doesn't . It takes a day or two to come back to operational. I heard alot about window regulators? Can you help me trouble shoot.

IF the regulator is not kaput, sometimes the motor could just "stick".
Try this the next time it doesn't work...Now, before you start thinking I must be crazy...No I'm NOT. I learnt this from a BMW book of tips and tricks, and it has worked for me on my previous E34. It has saved me the replacement cost of a regulator over several years just using this technique until I finally sold the car!

Try to locate where the motor would be located behind the door panel.
With a clenched fist, use the bottom fleshy part of your fist, and give the spot a good firm punch. Try the switch, if it doesn't work, try the punch again.

Good Luck!

I had that problem and ended up replacing the whole motor...what happens is that the pulleys in the door that raise the window up and down are made of plastic...the cables are made of twisted steel fibers....you get the picture? So what happens is the pulleys get twisted, bent, warped and are harder to turn if at all.....the makes the motor work "harder" to pull the window up and down, thus making it burn out faster. Try CosmosBlack's theory first...if that doesnt work pull of the door panel and look at the pulleys.....

Also the plastic pulleys will dry rot and break under the high tension of the guide cables. It happened to mine. It would work sometimes and not others. The cable was grinding against the metal of the regulator frame instead of gliding on the pulley. It also made a scraping sound like the glass was scraping aginst something. The sound was the cable scraping aginst the metal. Sux. Probably a 10 cent piece breaks and you have to spend 2 hours and over a $100 to replace the regulator (but not the motor!)

The motor replacement is a different issue. Make sure you try to determine which it is. The regulator is a mechanical piece of guide rails and cables that can be replaced separate from the motor.
