DSC Feeling???

Hello All,

When I get into spirited use of the accelerator and clutch on my 540i6MT (shifting at 5k-redline), I get the DSC kick in. Sometimes, I dont feel it when I go from 1st to 2nd gear....just light flashs. Then other times I feel the engine starts choking itself and the can drops its power for some time before the accel is continued...the DSC light does come on when this happens too. Whats happening here? Is it when there is mild wheel spin, I dont notice the DCS effects, and when there is too much wheelspin, I do feel it, by engine slowing itself down via some override?

I think having crazy amounts of torque does break the rear lose abit going from 1st to 2nd. I should try it without DSC on...but am a bit nervous. I'm still learning how to properly launch the car, coz if there is a situation at the lights that I need to proove something:).....I cant afford the DSC to choke the engine because it slows the car way down.

I don't know why it would come into play in straight-line acceleration. My car has ASC which I think is pretty much the same thing, I've never had that happen before.

Well, I guess pushing 350ft/lbs of torque and shifting at 6krpm from 1st to 2nd makes 2nd fall just on 3.7krpm where is where the engine puts out max torque. I can understand why the rear tires would have a hard time maintaining grip. I have to do more studies on it...but hate to burn rubber too much. Today I tried with DSC on, and shifting 1-2, and I felt mild wheel spin but no DSC light.....so this is a major hummm??? But, it was smooth launch.

even my 323 ASC kicks in when i start from the line and the symptoms are the same.

DSC works on 2 stages of intensity. with brake only, means the wheel that spins gets some treatment from the brake and with adjusting the engines output. that is why sometimes you don´t feel this engine-breaking when the ligh flashes.

Wadula, you are the man! Thats exactly how I felt it, but needed confirmation. I sensed for minor wheel slipinnage, the breaks come on on that one wheel, and engine is not affected. But when major wheel spinnage, the computer then decides enough is enough and reduces the power output from the engine.

New word for the day: Spinnage:)

Hey GTMAN.

Yeah, you're just getting a bit of wheelspin when you go from 1st to 2nd when you run it hard. You should get a small chirp from 2nd to 3rd, as well. My advice to you is to turn the DSC off when you are doing a full on race with someone. You should even try practicing a few hard runs with DSC off so you know how the car feels/responds when you get that bit of 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd wheelspin. The car shouldn't swing out of line or give you any surprises, but it's good just to know how it is. Personally, whenever I knew I was going to run the car hard (usually after I paid the EZPass toll on the highway, which is like 5mph to 80mph straight acceleration), I would just turn the traction control off. But every since my accident a few months ago, my traction control now kicks in much later and it usually doesn't interfere with my 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd wheelspin....problem solved. [:D]

This pretty much sums it up.

If I plan on a hard launch or 1st to 2nd powershift I always disable the DSC. There is a definite sweet spot with the 540i 6 when coming off the line and shifting. It seems I have to apply a little throttle to keep the RPM up but not too much. When you get it right it's silky smooth, almost like an automatic. Anyway, keep working on it. And make sure to disable the DSC if you're in for a street race or just having a little fun.

and when you turn your dsc off, make sure you hold on to it until you get the yellow brake light. now you can experience your car for what it truely is, go rip it.

and nothing's worse then dropping the clutch at a high rmp, only to make your grin turn into a wth? shock of sitting on your ass while the engine is choking on you and dsc light flashs [:D]
