I'm going to begin autocross racing in 2005, and I want to do it in a BMW. Since I'm 18 and can't afford an E36 to beat around, I'm looking to purchase an E30. The only problem is I'm not sure what one I want. Do I want a high reving high HP 325is or should I get a low reving but torky 325es. Could anyone also tell me what stock SCCA class these cars would be in?

The 318is is the best E30 track-car because it has a lot less weight over the front wheels and so turn-in is more crisp and direct. It's also easier on the consumables: brakes, tyres etc. Also, you can mod a 318is to give good power and its free-revving nature means it's well suited to the track.

If you really want a six though, then yeah get a 325is.

The E30 I6 is D Stock, except for the e model. The less powerful 325e is G stock, and the 318 is either G or H depending on year. The following link is an unofficial summary of the classes. This link is useful because you can see what the competition is for any given class, sorted by both make and class.

I autoX my eta with my local BMW Club and I run in the "slowest" class (FS) F is the class and S is for street tire. My personal opinion is to get an IS. If you choose to run in the Stock class SCCA you have a more competative car. The eta is great but you would want to chip it witch would put you into STS. And then you would have probalbly the slowest car in the class! So fire up an "325IS" You wont be dissapointed!
