What do you guys think I should swap my M10 for, an E30 M3 4-cylinder or an E36 M3 6-cylinder? Where would be the best place to get a rebuilt one? Mileage is an issue seeing as gas is 2.60 for regular and 2.80 for premium here now. [}:)]

The problem with an e30 M3 motor is that they are getting so old now that to find one with relative low miles would be next to impossible, and rebuilding one of those can cost 10-15k.

[???1] This is probabyly a stupid question, but why?
240+hp, weighs about as much as an M20 motor, MUCH more advanced than the S14... much smoother, much quieter (valvetrain-wise), and you dont have to rev it to 4,000 rpm to get any kind of torque. It's much more reliable, and much easier to work on. It's cheaper to work on, too.

Yeah I would have to say go with the E36 M3 (m50) engine. I am actually looking to get one for my car as well. I think BMP design has a kit for the engine swap too.
M50 is the 325i OBD-I motor, the S50 is the OBD-I M3 engine.

you could also compromize between the two and get an M50 (e36 325) if you worried about gas milage. Or even better get an aluminum 2.8

What is the power difference in these two compared to the S50?
www.bmwworld.com It's not hidden information or anything...

by the way if you want gas mileage get an M42 - the 4 cylinder introduced in the late 80's/early 90's in the 318is. Probably one of bmw's best motors - M50(2)/S50(2) is literally the same thing but with 2 more cylinders....

What do the E30's with the M50 or S50 get for mileage???? I am wanting to do this swap too.. .maybe this winter.

The newer M42 four cylinder engine is not a bad idea. You can get one used with lots of life left in them for relatively cheap. The four cylinder E30's weighed a lot less, like 300 pounds less or something. I could be wrong on that figure. So if you really want good gas mileage, then go with the M42. Car will be light weight, and have a small but good motor. You can get some power out of them too... but I dont know how much.

I thought the M50/S50 would bolt up to the stock tranny in teh E30's. Granted if you got on M motor you would want the bigger and stronger tansmission. If this is not true please tell me. Good to know this before I start swapping the engine on my car.

Gas just hit like $2.75 a gallon here in oregon. Premium is over $3 a gallon now. I am all for gas mileage. I have even considered buying a used M49(?) engine from eruope and putting it into my car. THey made a deseil version of the M50 in Europe..... what would an E30 with a deisel engien get for mileage.....? :)

300 pounds? The m20 only weighs like 340 lbs [rofl]. It's about 90 - 110 lbs lighter depending on what you got in it. The big advantage of the 4 cylinder is the weight is mostly behind the front axle.

M50 is much heavier than the m20 too. The problem with the tranny in the e30 is it is a piece of shit, literally. Both the ZF and the getrag. Synchro's only in 2, 3, 4, and 5, and tons of slop.
