Would a M E30 (auto) trany bolt up to a non M E30 motor ??? Because e30 automatic trany can't handel more horse's than it already has.

Or would a E30 M (auto) trany bolt up to a E36 M motor ? I think E36 trany is longer and would work. What do you guys think?

Just wondering

Thankx

Yeah took a couple reads, if you say "M Car" I would assume m3/5 of various years, e30 m car im assuming is an e30 m3, and no auto trannys, so this is one confused guy. The e36 tranny im pretty sure will bolt to an m20, because I know the m20 tranny (cant think of the model) will bolt to a m50/s50/s52.

Where are you from funkgoat? In some countries (such as NZ) there are two types of M car - the one we all know and love (i.e. m3 m5 etc) and then m3251i's and m318i's. In other countries like the states these cars have an 's' designation instead. You would know them as a 325is or a 318is. They have the mtech kits, LSD, a few other luxuries, and the engines have a few nicer bits but are essentially the same as the non-M or non-s variants. They are NOT to be confused with the so-called 'M' cars.

Is this what you are talking about funkgoat? Although these cars also only came in manual, so maybe not.

I have a automatic 1987 325ic and I was wondering if a M3 of the same body style (e30) automatic trany would bolt up. I don't wish to do a 5 speed conv. and I know that if I do anything to my motor to increase the horse power with this auto trany it will most likely sh*t the bed. I wasn't even sure if auto trany's were ever made in a E30 M3. So I try'n to find out if not that trany what will...but auto trany that is. Now someone said an E36 bolts up?

Not all transmissions are interchangable. 4-cyl transmissions are not compatible with 6-cyls. There are people that continue to use the e30 325e/i transmissions after doing an M50/M52 (e36 325i/328i) swap, in place of using the e36 6-cyl's tranny. Being able to do this leads me to believe that it would be possible to use an e36 6-cyl transmission with an e30 6-cyl. HOWEVER, I do not know if this applies to an automatic trasmission.
