What engine choices are there for swapping into an e34? I'm looking at buying one and since most of them have higher mileage, I'd like to swap the engine for one that is higher performance or has the highest capability of being built/tuned for high hp. I'm not sure if it makes a difference but it has to be a manual tranny, because what fun is an automatic when you want performance.

well if u have a E34 535i then u're fine. no neep to swap anything, that motor is absolutely bullet proof. the 525i on the other hand might break on you, and if u're mechanically inclined, u prolly know, that anything will fit if u try hard enough. the m3 e36 motor swap i've seen done, most often though, a simple turbo bolted onto the m30 will suffice in sucking your eyeballs out =]

I too am inclined about the e34 engine - I can't find another BMW model that has such a high percentage HP/Torque increase after Dinan stuff or an ESS Supercharger. The 1993-95 540i with a $6000 ESS supercharger is cranking out 410 hp, and Dinan looks like it can get over 550 hp and equal amounts of torque for around $12000.

I don't really know anything about engine ports (my technical knowledge of cars is pretty slim too). The way I understand it, when someone does an engine rebuild, they simply take the engine and replace all of the worn parts with parts that are the same but are newer. Is that correct?

And if that's correct, is doing an engine rebuild a sufficient work-around to prevent the damage that installing a supercharger on such an old engine would entail?

I was just looking at putting an ESS supercharger on a 540i and was wondering the same thing. Also what about putting a newer, '95 to '98 540i engine with the ESS s/c in an e34?
