I know that this problem is nearly impossible to diagnose by reading a post but I thought I'd give it a shot anyway. My engine has a nasty Tick Tick Tick at idle. It only happens once and a while and its not very consistent (it happens when its cold, hot, right after start up, etc.). If I give it a little gas and rev the engine it goes away for a bit and comes back. I tryed to clean the fuel injection with a can of BG44 K and that stopped it for about a month, but then it came back. I have also noticed lately that is smells like gas in the cab??? I need some help! I thought maybe exhaust leak? Any suggestions would be great! Thanks guys!

Get a long screw driver and touch the exhaust manifold and put your ear on the other end and listen for that sound through the screw driver. If you can hear it loud then their is a good possibility it is an exhaust leak. Exhaust leaks do make a ticking sound.

If it was a exhaust leak then would it come and go? Or go away at higher revs?
I agree that exhaust leaks at the manifiold can sound alot like a valve tick, usually a bit "softer", not quite as "clicky", if that makes any sense! Yes, they can come and go based on engine speed, engine/exhaust temperature, etc.

Also, the injectors do make a clicking noise, but you usually only hear that with the hood open.

Try to isolate it to the exhaust area (exhaust leak), upper block area (valve tick), fuel injection area, etc.

The fuel smell may be a bad/contaminiated charcoal cannister. It can get liquid gas in it, it should only pull vapors thorugh it. Gasoline in the charcoal cannister can also cause engine performance problems.

on a related note.....

I have a "clacking" noise kinda like a card in the spokes of a bike tire, but not at idle...ONLY under acceleration at lower rpms and under load...where the engine is still catching up to the throttle. I also thought exhaust leak but my mechanic checked all around and couldn't find any.

Could this be the same problem?

Since the original poster has a single vanos M50, and Montana has a 1998 540i (First year bmw's V8's got the single vanos), I'd have to say... its the vanos system. It happens and mostly at lower rpms (Under 2500 - 3500).

Also, both of you should make sure you have the right WEIGHT oil in the car. Both motors have hydraulic lifters, so in the morning for the first 10 seconds it should tick, but not after that.

This causes me to believe it is a fuel injector. Try some Red Line SI-1 injector cleaner. I know a lot of people who had injector noise and after using the SI-1 it never came back.
