1998 528ia.ABS and ASC warning lights came on and car all of a sudden won't shift out of first. I replaced front left wheel sensor and it did nothing, however when I disconnect this sensor car shifts fine. ABS and ASC are still not functioning though. ANY ADVICE??

I had the same problem with ABS and ASC with my e39, except mine was manual, so I had no problems with shifting gears, but it had other problems, i.e my gas gage was not acurate and range indicator was out of wack. The local bimmer shop was reading sensor fault codes and I end up paying $500 for replacing two sesors and flushing the break system twice over a period of 4 months. Finally I took it back to dealer and they end up replacing the ABS cotrol unit for $745 (took them half day - should have done that from day 1) all was fine after that. Ever since then, 2003, I have seen many posts and really think BMW should have made that a recall - there are so many e39s with the same problem.

My e39 is retired - I totaled the car in September after driving it for 8 years - Saved my life, Loved that car :^)

Best of Luck to you,
