Hello, I'm new to the forum, and I regret that it is under such ominous circumstances but I have ran in to a problem with my 1997 540 with 95K on it. I've never had any problems with it before.

Ok, I was driving down the hwy today, nothing special, no hard driving. now admittedly the car is in need of a service, I was hoping to get it done before school started back but no luck. So I wasn't too surprised when my "service engine soon" light came on while I was driving.

Anyway, I come to my turn off, slow down to make the turn across traffic and notice smoke coming from under the hood, not billowing but noticeable. my first though was radiator hose, quick glance at the kept gauge shows that the car was not currently overheating.

so I pull over check the ground for coolant and pop the hood (both hoses were intact.) I see smoke rise from both cylinder banks. It subsided quickly. My next though was head gasket. so I check the oil for the tell tale signs of hg failure, bubbles, milky color etc. but it looked ok...just in dire need of changing. I was unable to check to coolant as the engine was hot. The car wasn't pushing smoke out the exhaust either

So after the visual inspection I go to re-start the car. It starts on the first try but has to turn over a good bit more before it will fire.

The engine rpm at idle is normal but the engine sounds like it is mis-firing. Actually you can physically feel the motor shaking if you place your hand on it. Its not really bad though. Like it si running on 7 cylinders or something

The thing that bothers me the most (a part from the smoke)is that the car is ticking...Its a distinctive "tick tick tick tick" at idle. You cant here it while underway inside the car. The oil level is at full. but as I said...it needs changing

I had to drive the car back home. It is suffering from a noticeable lack of power, I stalled it twice pulling away from a stop. I pulled over at the nearest gas station to look under the hood again. This time I did not notice any smoke (theres none out of the exhaust either...thankfully)But the ticking was still there. The temp gauge. remained at normal operating temperature.

from my past experiences with other cars, the cars symptoms remind me of a car with either faulty ignition or (if I were to be so lucky) fouled plugs....seeing that it is in need of a service.

The smoke is still a bit of a mystery however, Any insight into what could be causing these problems would be great. The nearest dealer is about an hour, and I'm not sure if there are any "qualified" technicians in there area.

Thanks in advance for any help
Kelton

could still be head gasket it all depends on were the head gasket goes if its between an oil way and a water way then it will show the signs you where saying it may have gone between 2 cylinders might be worth a compession test most garages should have the gauge and its only a case of removing spark plugs

Bad News For New E38-E39 Owners-What BMW DOES NOT WANT YOU TO KNOW) Tell Tale Sign is DME CODE # 80 and 81,
These codes cannot be cleared from DME memory which will prevent the car from passing smog tests in strict emission states such as California.

It requires the Disassembly and Assembly of both Cylinder heads to clear or remove the carbon obstruction.
Bad mechanical design On BMWs part.

BMW ref materials ref: SI B11 05 04 Feb 2005 rev 1 / rev 2 June 2005
Area: ENGINE (problem normally occurs at approx 35,000 miles)

BMW Service Bulletin-dated: June 2005-supercedes SI B11 05 04 (Feb-2005)
SUBJECT: M62TU/S62 Secondary Air Diagnostics and Air Delivery Passage Cleaning Procedure.
This procedure requires DISSASSEBLY of the engine to gain access to the cylinder head (MAJOR ENGINE WORK Approximatly 40 hours)

This problem affects motors listed below:
MODEL(s): E38 (7 Series), E39 (5 series) E53 (X5) and Z8 with the M62TU or S62 Engine:
........................................................................................................
SITUATION: When accumulated vehicle usage exceeds 35,000 miles, a small number of vehicles listed may experience illumination of "Check Engine Light"
And the setting of Secondary Air Delivery Passages within the cylinder Heads.

CORRECTION: A Tool kit has been developed that will remove the guesswork in the diagnosis of of CLOGGED Secondary air passages and provide a method to remove the buildup CARBON deposits (FAULT CODES # 80 & 81 in DME MEMORY THESE CODES WILL PREVENT YOU FROM PASSING SMOG TEST IN STATES SUCH AS CALIFORNIA.) which are the cause of the FAULT. This tool already has been distributed to all BMW Service Centers via the Automatic Tool Shipment Program. Additional cleaning kits, PART number 99 00 0 006 668 may be purchased through your PDC. Refer to Parts Information Bulletin # 01 01 95 for Warranty Details..
KIT CONTENTS:
1) Cylinder head back pressure diagnostic tool
2) Set of 4 mm nylon final clean up brushes
3) Core plug installer
4) Drill bit to enable use of core plug remover
5) Reamer for 4 mm air passages
6) Set of 10 mm brass brushes to clean out main air passage.

NOTE:
The main secondary passage core plugs (12 mm) are not included in the latest production kits the core plugs-PN: 11 121 736 330 have to be ordered separately from PDCs (wty 3 per vehicle)

PROCEDURE:

IN CASE WHERE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON and CODE 80, 81 (or both) are stored in DME memory, its necessary to first verify that all external secondary air components are functioning. After following the applicable test PLAN in DISplus, proceed with the calibration of the cylinder head back pressure tool.
