E39 540iA Engine problem

Firstly - This is my 1st post,so hi to everyone.

I live in the UK,and have just returned to the BMW marque, having previously owned a E34 535i some years ago.I test drove a used e39 540ia,and fell in love. The engine sounded like a orchestra in full swing, and made me smile, everytime I hit the gas.

My smile has since been replaced with a look of anguish.

I jumped in the car,and started it up (the engine was still warm from a previous trip),and it immediatley whizzed round to 7000rpm [:0] ,and by the time I reacted, and switched it off,it must have been about three seconds. It now misses badly when warm, although,it ticks over sweet from cold.I checked both the throttle cable, and the pedal,to see if it was jammed, and they appeared normal.

Has anybody any ideas as to what may have caused this.I have it booked in for a Inspection 2 this week, and while I was doing so,the guy plugged his diagnostic tool into the car.It reported, that it was missing on every cylinder, and the thermostat was not opening - thus the car was overheating.Seeing as the garage was busy, and I had to wait for a slot,I have parked the car up,for fear of damaging it further.

I have started the car from cold, and so far,the high revving fault hasn't returned.

Probably a stupid question, but on the serious rating scale, does it sound like I have something to worry about,or is there a known fault that could cause this.

The car was manufactured in Aug 1997 & and has covered 77,100 miles.

Any suggestions or idea's,are more than welcome - as I have three more days before the garage can see it,and the worry is driving me mad.I have had the car 2 weeks!

Best Regards

Jerry

sorry to hear. i hopped to see you having the same problem as my mom does, unfortunately yours is just vice versa. our 540 iA starts and then dies again without staying alive for at least a second. yours seems to be more alive than necessary...sorry, but no help here. i just wanted to let you know that your not alone with 5er problems [hihi]

Many thanks for all those that replied, and emailed.

Just got the car back from having it's inspection 2 - it's been transformed.

The problem arose because some genius, who had the car before me,decided to jet wash the engine bay, before selling the car.The V8's spark plugs, are recessed deep into the engine, and apparently, the reccess's had filled up with water around the spark plugs!!!

After having the mapped thermostat replaced,as well as plugs, filters etc - she know runs like a completely different car.

The moral of this story - if anybody is tempted to jet wash their 540's engine bay,I'd strongly advise against it!!

The only bad news - both rear cats are on their way out !!!! DOH!
