One of my 3 BMW's is a 2000 528T with 115,000 carefully driven highway miles on it. For example I put my first set of brakes on at 94K. A few months back I read an article in Rondel about the E39 clutch pedal and of course I cannot find the particular issue or article. My clutch pedal feels spongy and loose and I realize with this many miles, it is going to need replacement parts.

Any suggestions what part(s) I should replace as long as I am doing the job?

This Rondel article also talked about lubricating the pedal or replacing a spring but I cannot remember all of the details. Can anyone shed some light on this topic?

The shift linkage is loose and I would like to tighten this up too. Threads I have read about aftermarket linkage products do not sound too encouraging. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help!

Shift linkage will require you to drop the tranny, but the clutch problem sounds like a mushy master cylinder or bad fluid possibly. Most likely a master cylinder. If you're okay with changing brake pads, and you have a manual for your car, then you should be able to do the master cylinder yourself.
