E39 rear cup holder removal

I have a '98 528i and the rear cup holders are broken (seems like a common problem). I would like to take them out, but I don't know how. Can anyone give me some tips?

They pretty much "snap" right out. I wound up replacing them only to have my kids kick them apart....for now they are covered with a thick clear packing tape till the kids learn to respect mom/dad's stuff. I thought of looking for an alternative (like another cubby hole) but didn't spend any time on it.

I dismantled mine and glued mine dead so that they don't open anymore.
They wouldn't close and catch, and they won't hold shit to begin with!
So I made them flush with the panel, now only for show.
