e46 v e36

I just sold my Audi A4 and I am interested in a M. I am contemplating whether to buy an e46 or e36 M3. Dont get me wrong, I am crazy about the e46 but with the new ms coming out in a year or two I dont know if an e46 is a
smart buy. Additionally, the e36s have already taken a substantial shot in value, thus making the car much more affordable. Do any of you BMW fanatics have any insight. Perhaps you can elaborate on the most significant
advantages and disadvantages associated with each car. Thanks.

If you are moving up from an A4 you will be happy with either model. How much are you willing to spend? You can get a '01 M3 for under $40k.

I am willing to spend around 40ish. Can you explain some of the most noticable differences between the two cars other than the sexy look of the e46 and the 90+ hp.
