Just left a deposit on a new 530I with premium sound and satelite prep that was built on 3/23. Can anyone tell me what is required to upgrade the radio for Sirius service. I'm assuming a software upgrade of the radio and sometype of receiver is required??? Also what does the dealer charge you for the upgrade. Thks -

a Sirius answer...

I am waiting for the Sirius install on my 545, and as I understand it there is a software issue, though I don't know if they take care of that when you order the Sat. prep or if it is done at the dealer. As for the actual radio, I assume it goes in the trunk. My dealre quoted me around $525 for the unit and installation, though he said that without knowing actual install time. He used 2 hrs. for the estimate though I have seen other posts indicating much longer times for install.

Does the radio require replacement even if you have the Premium Sound Package???? Also why wouldn't the dealer know exactly how many hours it takes to install, haven't they done it before???? Thks - M

no replacing the stock radio, just add-on. And no, as of four weeks ago when I picked up the car, they had not actually done one yet. The kit was just hitting the U.S. I'll call him back because they should have done some by now. I had just seen a post on another board where he talked about it taking 8 hours for his install. No mention of whether he paid for all 8 hours of labor.

It's important to note that Sirius is still not yet working if you have Navigation.

There is supposed to be a software update in the fall that will allow pre-wired cars to get it installed (maybe).

good point Rudy, I can't believe I forgot to mention that! I have even seen some folks report problems with the reception on the standard radio w/ NAV. Again, I don't have the NAV so can't really speak to that issue.

Here's an update. I contacted my dealer and this is what I was told. The Sirius upgrade requires the installation of the Sirius module at a cost of $795 + tax. In addition the cost for the Sirius service is $142 per year but you get the first two months free. This seems a little steep to me considering the Factory installed option is only $595 and you get the first year of Sirius service free. What do you guys think????

$795+ tax? That does sound steep. I'll double check, but I thought my dealer verbally quoted me the $595 number for module, INCLUDING installation. The $142 for a year is the right number, but I agree that if the factory install gets you a free year, why not the dealer install? I'll let you know what my dealer here in New Orleans says tomorrow.

Now that's interesting! Is there no software/upgrade issue or is that all taken care of w/ the Sat. Prep option? More details if you have them! Doesn't the Sirius module plug in back in the trunk, and I assume that all the appropriate connections from antenna and to iDrive are available back there. I'd love to learn more about this, thanks for the link. I'll be out of the country for a while, so I'll call when I get back.
