E60 Tire Problems - It Never Ends

So, I have had 2 run-flat tires replaced (by BMW) with 12,000 miles on them because they were shredded to pieces. I was then told that I should have the other 2 tires replaced AT MY EXPENSE! Well, those 2 tires were moved to the rear and 2 new Bridgestone run-flats were placed on the front wheels.

Yesterday, my side wall on my left front tire burst. These tires have 5,000 miles on them. It will cost me $350 to replace this tire. I have been told by my dealer - Brecht BMW - that this must be due to a road hazard, like a pothole. They also told me that my rear tires are showing cords and are wearing unevenly on the inner rim. THIS IS THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM I HAD WITH THE TIRES THAT BMW REPLACED!

There is obviously a problem with the alignment on the E60 that causes excessive tire wear on the inside edge of the tires. I have had my car aligned twice in the past 6 months. I am always told that the alignment is within specs. I can't believe that BMW won't acknowledge this problem. I am seriously thinking about replacing the tires, selling my car and suing BMW for the loss in value and unnecessary out-of-pocket repair costs WHILE THE CAR IS UNDER WARRANTY!!

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated! [boxface]

My E60 has had no such problems, though I don't have the run-flats. In looking at this and several other boards, there have been many complaints about the stock run-flat tires, ranging from excessive wear to noise. I might suggest you try a set of regular tires on the car. They will fit your standard BMW rims and will not affect the operation of the Flat Tire Monitor.

Absolutely do NOT pay out of your pocket for this!! Sounds like the same shit that ford went through with their FIRESTONE tires blowing out on ford explorers.

Presue lemon law.

As much as I would like to be a warrior in these issues, I have to have a car to run my business (I am an independent computer consultant). I can't afford to "tilt at windmills" and am tired of fighting BMW and my lousy dealer. I went out and fitted my car with 4 Michelin non run-flat tires at Discount Tire for $1,000. I feel used but I felt like I had no choice. I will probably be selling my 2004 530i with 17,000 miles on it in the near future. I am too tired of dealing with numerous design flaws and wondering what the next issue will be -- active steering has ruined 5 tires and nobody will acknowledge it.

It probably has numerous other issues that haven't popped up either.

It's just great to hear that bmw decided to go this direction.
(yes that is sarcasm).

Good luck. Buy yourself an Acura TL or something.

wait for new 3 series, it's stuffed to the teeth with all that new "advanced technology". I have nothing against the technology, I'm a software engineer myself. And that's why understand one thing - more complex the technology is = more chances something goes wrong, so I like to keep things simple and essential, it's a car not a mobile computer lab. They should do broader beta testing before releasing new models at least.

Holy Shit man.....I just had to replace all 4 of my tires for the same problem 22k miles. All 4 tires were bald to the wires on the inside track. Did they look like this?

I am pissed, BMW says there is nothing they can do because the alignment is only under warranty for 2000 miles. Who the hell knows that the alignment on all 4 tires is bad in the first 2000 miles. New tires cost me 1400 euro + I had to buy winter tires and rims 750 euro + BMW charged 188 euro to re-adjust the alignment, 6 hours and at todays exchange rate that is ....3140 dollars. Can you imagine this tire blowing out on me at 130mph +....would have ended very tragically.

It seems that car companies forget what they are building... CARS. The point of the car hasn't changed, and honestly I've had no problem driving vehicles without an expensive idrive system.

Unfrigging believable!! So after I get the run-around from Brecht BMW that they are NOT going to do anything about the tire, I call Discount Tires. I get prices on Michelin PS2's and replace ALL FOUR (4) TIRES. Of course, these are NOT run-flat tires. I will never buy run-flat tires again. I took care of this last week -- it was Tuesday and Wednesday. So, today, Thursday, I get a call from Brecht BMW that they will take care of my 2 front tires!! What do they think I've been driving on for the past week -- rims?? What kind of customer service is this?? A dealer initially tells you to go to hell and then over a week later says, "Oh, please, come back so that we can take care of you properly!". I am so livid after having spent $1,000 on new tires I don't know what to do!!!!!!

oh man, Wayne that sucks to hear.

you'd figure you'd get much better treatment and service from a luxury dealer. but in the end, its all about teh same.. [:(] i don't really know what you can do either.. (sure moaning, complaining, throwing stuff are all something you can do, but will it accomplish anything?) wonder if speaking to bmw na about your treatment will get you some head way. also when you get the satisfaction survey, you can be sure to give them the crappiest rating. (dealerships actually get penalized for less than 5 star service in every catagory, so stick it to them..)

That does suck. If they want to help out, I'd gladly send them the bill and ask them to pay for half of it and get your $500 bucks back.

By the way, what do you think of the ride on the non-run flats vs. your old run-flats?

Thats what I would do, request reimbursement for the price of the two tires, I'm sure there cheaper than dealer installed runflats...

No comparison. The handling seems as good if not better and the ride is much softer. The ride on the run-flats is so harsh. Every time I would hit a bump it seemed like the whole car hit a wall.

I am sending me invoice for the tires via fax to the dealership today. I will let everyone know how they and BMW NA handle it.

Wish me luck.

Okay, so the saga continues. Apparently this thread was monitored by a BMW NA representative. That person called Brecht BMW and authorized them to buy back my Michelin tires for the $1,000 that I paid for them. They are also going to replace my tires with four new Bridgestone run-flat tires (not my first choice, but I can't turn down the $1,000 buyout). I will let you know when the transaction actually goes through -- currently schedule for Mar 3.

That is good for you....I hope it all works out. Wish they would have bought back the 780euro's worth of tires I had to buy. Mine is gone thank God. I just hope that I have much better luck with my X3.

I to just found out today, the hard way, that I have the exact same issue with my 04 530i sport. My wife and kids were on the freeway when the tire warning came on. Both rear tires were worn to the metal and one was completely flat. I bought the car about 6 months ago from BMW with 14k miles and it now has 19k. That seems way to early to wear through two tires. The outside looks fine and the inside is completely gone.
Do you have a contact for BMW NA that helped with your case? I can't believe that this is "normal wear and tear". I looks like I might be getting rid of my 530 with 19k miles.
Thanks,
