Help, Please......
I have a 1991 318is(e30). The car runs fine on the first start(always), but when it gets hot, and i shut down and start it again the engine hiccups for maybe 30 secs, only with gas pedel depressed and check engine light comes on then goes out, after that 30-60sec it drives perfect???? This happens everytime, I can predict it like clockwork!!!. The engine code i am getting is 1222 (Lambda control 1). This is the explination i got for it:

"This code is stored when the DME detects excessive
deviations in the air-fuel mixture (too rich or too lean) for longer
than 10 seconds. Possible causes: Fuel tank ran empty,
Incorrect Fuel Pressure, Injector valve defective or coked,
Engine Temperature Sensor defective, Secondary air leak,
Fuel evaporation control system defective, Air Flow Meter
defective and/or the combustion is being disturbed by
mechanical failure (Spark plugs,, compression,
intake/exhaust valves, ...etc.)"

It does not really narrow it down at all. Has anybody run across this before?
Please help I don't know where to start?
Thanks for your time, and hopefully simple Cure/explination!!

That is the problem - it could be any of those things. What you should do is get a copy of the Bentley workshop manual - there is a really good trouble shooting section which tels you what bits to narrow down and eliminate first with step by step instructions.

Good luck!

Yes, it could be any of those. The easiest/quickest place to start is to examine all of the plastic and rubber pieces on the air intake side AFTER the Mass Air Flow meter. You are looking for an air leak that is confusing the lambda calculation.

Beyond that, it will take systematic troubleshooting. The Bentley is the way to go!
