E30, E36 and E46 are BMW 3-Series models, including M3. IIRC, E30 ran from 1985 (or 86?) to 1991. E36 ran from 1992 to 1998 (sedan) / 1999 (coupe/convertible). E46 is the current model. S-- is the type of BMW engines designated for the M cars. The E46 M3 has the S54 engine. E30 and Euro E36 had the "Evo" M3 models.

M3 run down

First of all the //M stands for Motorsport, and its bmw's motor sport division.

They offer an M3 and M5 that varied in years it was produced.

The American E36 M3 is a 240 hp 240 ft-lb torque car that is quite similar to other e36's in styling. The differences are a rear underbody diffuser, more bold front bumper, all the M decals, and of course all the M tuning components.

M3's have stiffer shocks and struts, and bigger rotors and brakes.

In the inside, it has the tri color M stripes on the seats, and an M on the shift knob.

hope this helps, but the basic idea behind the M series is a wolf in sheeps clothing, that looks quite like a standard 3 series, but are super performers.

The M3 is different from the regular 3's in that it comes with 18" M wheels, more aggresssive bodywork all around (particularly in the front), and the quad-tip exhausts.
M cars receive that "M" badging when they fall under certain BMW specifications. To be an "M" car, the vehicle has to be RWD, and it has to meet certain acceleration, handling, and braking standards, and there are some other specs as well. Basically, an M car is an extremely high-performance machine in which its performance can make it classified as a "sports car". I know this is debatable, but I sure as hell consider the M3, as well as the M5, sports cars.

Plus the engine. ;) The main difference is that the M cars are manufactured by BMW M whereas the regular BMW cars are made by BMW AG.

They are probably all true, though they do not classify certain BMW cars as "M" after they've been built. They simply build "M" cars according to their specs. Remember the 850CSi? That's every bit as "M" as the other M cars but did not get the M badge for some reason.

In my book, there are no 4-seater sports cars. [hihi]

so is the "evo" an engine type?
since "M" stands for "Motorsport", does M5 stand for "motorsport 5-series"? and M1? wut's a "rear underbody diffuser"?

No, "Evo" is a designation for certain types of the M3. In Europe, the M3 produced between 1996 and 1999 was called "M3 Evo," meaning it's an evolution model of the one produced in 1994-1995. They have the same body style, but the Evo has a larger, more powerful engine (3.0-litre 286 hp vs. 3.2-litre 321 hp).

"BMW M" is the subsidiary of "BMW AG." BMW M is tasked to produce the Motorsport version of the BMW cars. They are also responsible for the production and management of the BMW Formula One engines (for BMW Williams).

I believe the 850csi had "BMW M Power" on the engine cover, not just "BMW". I may be wrong though. Can anyone verify this?
You're right; the 850CSi has got a true "M" engine whose cover says "BMW M Power." In fact, I still believe the car should have been called "M8."

how to tell the diff

at first glance an M3 next to the same year 3 series looks very similar... but take a few more seconds and you see immediate differences... the stance is lower, wider, more aggressive... the front spoiler looks like a shark coming in for a bite... a much meaner looking grin than the standard 3 series shows almost malicious...
from the side... can't really tell too much from the standard 3, the side gill on the front quarter panel tells the story there.
the back says quite a bit... you'd know it was an ///M without badging.. - 4 exhaust pipes growl, the little spoiler on the lip of the trunklid and the lower stance and width are very visible... the wheel wells are just a little wider and the flare is noticable... sexy, like a woman's body... curveaceous in all the right place... gorgeously built up top - but not too big!! then, tapering down to a small waist but at the hips - curving back out to a great ass! call me chauvanistic, but i look at beautiful cars as women...
personally, my favorite view of the car from the outside is from a front 3/4 view when she's all detailed and shining..

from the interior, differences all over the place... M3 badging everywhere (seats, doorsills, gauge cluster, headrests, mats - literally everywhere) plus, if you've got SMG, the chrome shifter gets lots of gawks.. navi does too, especially when you open it up and it pops out and tilts... people love that one.

the wheels say a lot... but i see lots of standard 3's with aftermarket wheels so that won't always be a true indicator... i've got chrome aftermarket OEM types. people always ask me if they came with the car or if i bought them aftemarket because the chomes look so good!! right now i've had the standard silver ones on for the winter, but i'm probably changing them back tomorrow if its nice enough... did't want them getting messed up with any snow or such.

lastly... the engine sound... a little louder... meaner growl... i've read a lot of reviews where they thought the M3's engine song at high RPM's was a little weak and shreik-y (sic)... i think it sounds like a symphony!!! it doesn't sound fake or tinny - just a deep bark that means business.. although its not a deep rumble like a big block V8, it does not disappoint.

also, i've pulled up next to a lot of guys and women at stoplights, in traffic, at the convenience store or mall and people just gawk at the car... lots of thumbs up, or "sweet ride" "hot car" "that's my dream car".. that alone just makes it fun to cruise around in, its the subtlety and stealth that makes it wondrous.... people who know love the car.... people who don't know.. still love the car... its a win win situation with her.. i'm happy to drive - everyday - for any reason i can think of... how many people just look for reasons to drive around???? i always come up with reasons and i always take the long way to get there.... nuff said.
