advice please - thermostat or water pump or other?
I have a 1989 318i automatic
the other day my cooling system failed...the engine got hot quickly.
the radiator was leaking & when inspected was full of rust. It has been replaced. However, the engine still runs hot quickly.
I have tried to flush the various pipes. Water does not get past the thermostat when flowing in through its exit.
When water is passed into the heater tubes it flows out from both through the lower hose entering the expansion side of the radiator.
When the engine is run with all but the heater hoses attached, there is no flow through the heater hoses, even at operating temperature.
Water does also not get past the thermostat even at running temperature.
I presume that the thermostat needs replacing but remain a little puzzled as I might have expected some flow through the radiator hoses.
I guess the next step if the thermostat is not at fault would be the water pump.
Any thoughts would be appreciated

If the thermostat is completely closed then you won't have any water-flow back into the radiator.

Sounds to me as though the thermostat is gone so replace that, which is easy. I posted a thread on how to change it recently as my thermostat was broken too. Also, make sure you put BMW coolant in your radiator to prevent it from rusting like you alluded to in your post and this will make your car run much better.

Good Luck
