My 1990 535i entered diagnostic mode unbidden and lit up the cluster like a video game. The mechanic reset the display using a BMW diagnostic scanner. Isn't there a way to enter/leave diagnostic mode just using some combination of push buttons on the cluster, since I don't own a scanner?

yeah
there is .... i can't remeber exactly...
if u have the key in position 2 and the computer stalk pressed in i think it
tests all the lights and guages on the dah....
then there is the stomp test where u stomp a certain number of times on
the gas and it'll show u the error codes....and then there's the obc unlocking
which gives u even more goodies to play with =]

try google, if u can't find em, let me know =]

Thanks for the advice. I'm a novice at this. The car spontaneously went into diagnostic mode and stayed there. In case this happens again, I was hoping I could reset out of diagnostic mode myself without paying someone $100 to do it with a scanner. Our other car (Eldorado Touring Coupe) lets you enter diagnostic mode, read error codes, and get back out just by pressing some weird button combinations on the dash.

I did try google. That's how I found this site. Thanks again for your response.
