excessive blowby

I have an 84 318i and i am a victim of excessive blowby.

When i leave the car idle and then drive away, my car blows a big blue puff of smoke. Same happens when i coast down hills in gear, and then punch the gas.

Is this because my rings are shot and the car is allowing excess oil to pass through the intake by way of the PCV system to be burned away?

What would cause my car to be this way? i know my idle control valve does NOT function properly. Could this be the culprit?

ANY info would be helpful. Thank you.

Sounds like you need a ring job.

check if you have slight oil in the airbox after the car was driven for a longer while. i heard that in that case overpressure arises that can press oil through engine venting (don't know the technical term so i try descriptive talking) into the air box. than you know for sure that the ring is gone.

mmm. dont think so... iv'e heard that oil in the intake bellows is common & not a big deal

could be wrong, but that's what i've heard when people say "holy crap, what' wrong w/ my car? there's oil in the intake system!!!" [confused]

I was talking to my dad, and he said it could be because my PCV hose is all plugged up with carbon, oil and what not, and thats why at IDLE, i get the big blue cloud when i drive away. Because the PCV isn't venting properly and is all building up until i rev up the car, increasing the vacuum and thus sucking the PCV mixture out of the crankcase, and into the intake to be burned away by normal means.

i think it makes sense. I am going to look into it on my next day off, because honestly, it hasn't been real consistent on how, when and why it blows the blue smoke.

The build-up in the intake over the time is usual thing for this cars because ther is a hose in there which collects the gas and oil fumes and returnes it in there. Just need to clean it from time to time...
About the problem no ideas, sorry...

i sprayed some carb clean down the pcv hose. I know my car DOES have a problem with oil burning, but i wasn't going to accept that it was that bad. Anyways, it has seemed to help and has kept the blue smoke down to, a tiny puff at starting and a tiny puff after idling for 5-10 mins.

I want to eventually take that hose right off and clean it out. see how that'll help.

SMoke wher ? lol

umm ive been told that bimmers especially 4 cylanders have and issue with valve seals and since the engines have soo much vaccum when u idle or go down a hill the vaccum is intense and sucks oil by the valve seals soo i wouold definetly reccomend changing them ther cheap and its easy to do if you have a torque wrench it requires removing the valve springs and the keepers and the tappets but it should fix ur problem if u have a valve spring compressor that will work without taking off the head then that is much easier if u dont have one i would reccomend an oil addetive or just plain thincker oil if ur engine has quite a few k i run 20/50w in my car castrol all the way my motor is an m20 L6 so giver a whirl by putting thinker oil in it wont pass by the valve seals

lol, thanks man. much appreciated. i didn't think it was a ring problem. The car is NOT gutless at all. i knew it had to be a problem with the vlave guides.

i have 5w30 in there right now. Thats a bit thicker oil hey?

your posyt was kinda wierd to read, lol, you need some punctuation man.

Oil Smoke

Hello Rukus,
The smoke could be cause by the oil your using. Try this and see what happends.

If there is a farm supply store in your area, purchace a 15W 40 industrial engine oil for your car. Industrial engine oils are a little different then fuel saving oils. Evaparation is common in most oils. I use "Mystic" brand oil in my vehicles. It's actually a very high quality oil, not some cheap oil. It's produced in Texas. Anyway, some other good advice is to avoid synthetics in older engines. No, I'm a firm beleiver in synthetic oils so bare with me here. A Mobil oil tech (triblologist) in a class I attended, explained it in easy terms. The rubber parts inside older engines were made of a different composition then that of later model engine rubber internals. The additive package in synthetics has more additives then non-synthetics for the extended drain intervals. In short, the older rubber parts harden and break apart when using synthetics. I've seen this inside my own engines and had to face up to the fact that this happens. Now I use what I consider the next best oil, Mystic.....

The oil i have in my car right now is Walmart brand oil in 5w30 grade. i beleive it is called Tech2000

Many farmers around this area stand by it and say it is an excellent oil, and you don't have to pay an arm and a leg for it.

The last oil i had in there was quakerstate oil, and it made my engine sound rough, my car ran like shit and it made clacking noises upons startup. I put walmart oil in there and the car ran better, sounded smoother and the clacking noise at startup was gone.
