Excessive 'Fan' Noise in 540I-6

Last night I started to hear what I can only describe as excessive 'fan' noise from the engine. It sounds like the radiator fan is running at speeds higher than normal. Most notable in low gears, but I can hear it at all speeds. When I rev above 2K RPM it sounds terrible; like the fan is running twice as fast as it should. I also feel a lost of power.

I'm wondering if this could be a sign that the Catalytic converter is going. Any one experience this before? I don't have any check engine lights coming on or anything.

It carried over today except for 1 trip at lunch time. Then the noise returned tonight.

I don't really see the connection between lots of fan noise and a dodgy cat-converter. Are you sure the big fan noise is not just when you first get going, after which it cuts out? My dad's 740iL (with the M62 like yours) makes a huge amount of fan noise for about 1 minute after which it dies down. I think the aux fan cuts in automatically when the car starts and then cuts out again after a short time. Are you sure it's not just this?

If it's going all the time then I'm not sure what the problem is.

well if it has one, I'd check it. Maybe the clutch has failed in an always on position. That way it increases with engine speed, and is a drag on the engine.
True, but that would be a strange failure. When fan clutches fail, they almost ALWAYS fail such that they slip excessively and the fan runs too slow.

Not necessarily. Most aftermarket (Behr) fans that fail stay on. Mine did it, my friend's on his e36 did it, and my friend's Miata had a Behr, and that did the same thing Plus I've heard of it on numerous forums. My e30's Sachs (or whoever makes the oem one) failed and just 'slipped'
