I've noticed for a while that when the car is on, it's almost impossible to do anything for too long in the trunk. The fumes from the exhaust are overpoweringly strong. Smells sort of like warm chlorine. Anyone else notice this?

Like sulfur? Which car is it, the e36? It is most likely bad o2 sensors which made the cat go bad. This is pretty common for some reason.

Yeah like epj3 alluded to it could be O2 sensors and the cat but also check the spark plugs and the air filter.

Also, if your engine is running rich it could be a leaking idle control valve vaccuum tube which is just behind the throttle body.

Other than that.... I'm out of ideas.

It's an E46 2003 M3. I thought it was normal. I guess I will have it checked out then.

There must be something wrong, unless the car is new??
New cars have such strict emissions requirements nowadays that they let butterflies out of the exhaust system. The new Saab 9-3 even cleans the air as it uses it. You should be able to stand behind your car while it's running all day long.

O2 sensors are pretty bulletproof now. No its not a cat problem I know what he means. Its just normal exhaust. It's the same way on my car. Maybe because the exhaust isnt over to the side like most its right where you stand. Your not suppose to be there that long anyways.
