Hello all,

On starting my 1989 525i today there was an extremely loud bang from the back of my vehicle.

I believe that the vehicle suffers from over-fuelling during startup and I think a sufficient amount of fuel found its way into the rear muffler, causing quite a nasty explosion when it ignited.

As the pictures below show the muffler casing has exploded outwards causing significant damage to the bumper! [bigcry]

exploding rear e34 muffler

your muffler exploded!!!!!! phooey phooey phooey. nice one cyril, nice one son [hah] .
My 540i suffers from over fuelling on all 8 cylinders, even driving like a granny i only get 19mpg and 24 on the Mway.
My advice is to do lots of drive offs from greedy petrol stations by accidently forgetting to clean your number plates after driving down that muddy horse track near your house.

WOW! I would never have expected that to happen!
Though I have had a battery explode under the hood of a Honda Accord!
That was nasty, thick white fumes and the hood was dented!

Me too, and in the middle of a road trip. No white fumes or dented hood, though, so it wasn't that bad.
