What does the car do to indicate the fan clutch is failing?

Overheating at idle, when stopped?

Also, what exactly is it in the fan clutch that is broken, it doesn't make sense to me. It seems it should always turn, as it is connected to the engine itself......

The viscous coupling fan clutch fails because the oil that is in it leaks out the rear seal (con the inside) causing the clutch to spin freely and not drive the fan asif the engine was cold, causing the engine to (after operating temp) run normal operating temp at freeway speeds and overheat in stop-go trafic.

The viscous clutch in my fan is so bad that you can stop the fan turnig with your hand and hold it while the engine runs!

Although I wouldn't recommend you try this!!!!! I have chopped the top off my thumb by accidently putting it in the blade of a moving fan on an e30. Luckily for me expert medical staff managed to fix me up and I have a normal looking thumb with about 80% feeling in the top.

Sorry this doesn't help you with your prob, but I don't really want you putting your hand in the way of your fan please!

Hey, its Graham by the way - handles seem so formal.

The site closed down on me for over a month, then I think it must have had a new url assigned or something as I used to access it via the www.hotbimmer address, so I thought the site had gone. been months since I visited as a result - was playing online last night and found it again by accident at this address, so I'm back.
