first time at the drag strip

A few friends and I went to the Great Lakes Dragaway tonight.

It was about 50-55 degrees.

I was running Toyo Proxes T1-S at normal street pressure, and was not doing burnouts to warm up the tires. My car is basically stock.

This was my first time at a drag strip.

Here are my best #s of the night:

R/T .653 (different run than the below #s)

0-60 2.059

1/8 8.923 @ 81.11 mph

1/4 13.845 101.54 mph

I think that's pretty good for a first timer, given the conditions.

The magazine numbers put the car at 13.6-13.7.

It was a good time. I can see doing that once or twice a year.

The sixty foot time (not 0-60 mph, as you can see I did 0-81 mph in 8.9 secs) was pretty fast, but my trap speed may be a little low. I was thinking the car would hit 103 mph or so. I don't think the clutch is slipping, so it may be a little out of tune or just a 'slow' NSX.

I actually ran a 2.058 the run before, with a 13.887 quarter at 101.26 mph.

I suppose I could bring the slips to work, scan them in, and post them, but I probably won't get around to it unless somebody starts talking sh!t that they don't believe me. (Not an invitation, by the way. [;)] )

I suppose I asked for that, junglestylz.

Actually, the night had its ups and downs.

I started out in the low 14s, but improved around 0.1 seconds in the quarter each run.

On my second run I forgot to put the car in gear, and ended up with a 3.5 second reaction time. [?|]

I then proceeded to leave my exterior and interior lights on for an hour, run down the battery, cause the alarm to go off until I opened the hood, removed the spare, and unplugged the battery. Then we had to pop the clutch to get it started.

After that fiasco, everything went very well.

I was with a few 3rd Gen RX7s, an Evo, and a 1998 M3.

One of the RX7s was running high 12s at 116 mph. With that trap speed he should have been mid-low 12s, but he was getting no traction. The other was running low 13s. The Evo ran a 13.2, and that thing is stock! The M3 driver wasn't having much luck. I know he was running low 15s for his first runs. I don't know if he made it into the 14s. That car should run a 14 flat.

Does anyone know where there is a moderately cheap place to by stainless stee pipe¿ I want to make two eight foot long valveless pulsejet engines to mount on either side of my car with fully modulating augmentors so the I may have a chance at breaking 14 seconds with my car. hehe

Swap an M50 motor from wrecked E36 325i, 328i, or M3 and you should be in that range.

I have seen a few 8 valve 318i race cars. No drag racer 318s as of yet.

Right now I can't justify spending a butt load of time and money into my car. I would rather save a few grand and buy a 1993 325is. Then maybe keep the E30 and drop an M50 in it.

My error, I was thinking 0-60 mph. That makes it a lot more reasonable as well.
I should have been more specific in the original post. I thought it was clear from the drag race context, and the fact that I ran to 81 mph in 8.9 seconds, but you are not the first one to read that and interpret it as MPH.

At the drag strip, 0-60 measures the time it takes for the car to reach a point 60 feet from the starting line. It is crucial for street cars, and makes the difference between a good run and a bad run on most occasions. They say a drop of .1 seconds in the 0-60 is good for .2 in the quarter mile time.

The measurements at the drag strip are based on distance.

I mentioned my 8.9 second to 81 mph run to point out that it should have given a clue that the 0-60 was not mph.

Does that explain it? [:D]
