Fuel gauge and miles left

Has anyone ever run a 530i's tank dry? I was driving home today when the low fuel warning light came on. I was about 20 miles from my exit and the Mileage Remaining indicator said I had almost 30 miles left, but it was fluctuating, so I didn't take the chance on running out of gas and stopped at an earlier exit for some. I was just wondering if anyone has pushed the limit and knows how accurate the gauge and/or Mileage Remaining indicator are.

Running out of gas has to be the all time stupidest thing ever. Imagine how embarrassing that is to call roadside assitance and wait for them to bring you some gas.... When the orange light comes on, which is a rare occassion Id take it to next gas station immediately. Also the manual says not to let the tank get below 35miles remaining, it's supposedly bad.

I can think of and have witnessed far stupider things, but essentially I agree there's usually no good reason to run out of gas, which is why I stopped instead of pushing it. The gas station where I stopped charges $.20 more per gallon than the one at my exit, so I threw in a few bucks and drove on.

Still, I'd like to know how accurate the gauge and the indicator are. Stupidity notwithstanding. [rolleyes]

I have had close encounters a few times, usually on long interstate drives. I never had the guts to find out but had done down to like 15 miles before and I said "I give up, better stop this exit before there's none ahead!"

Anyway, how accurate it is...that's a hard thing to say. The computer comes up with that figure not only based on the amount of gas in the tank, but how you drive. Like how hard you are pushing the car, and what speed you are traveling at, etc. So it's hard to tell, that explains the fluctuating of the miles that you mentioned.

I hit 6 miles left on my car.. A bit scared, I had about 20 left before the exit, then a tiburon decided to race me. Gas went quick when I was doing 140mph.. I did make it to the gas station though..

Also, you aren't supposed to run the tank near dry since your fuel pump is cooled by the gas it pumps. When you are low on gas, the fuel pump will heat up and wear out faster.
