Fuel Regulator?

Hi all, I drive an 87' 325is

I've been having trouble with my fuel, I think. I had trouble passing DEQ because of too many unburnt HCs, I can smell unburnt gas when the car starts and for a while after, and I've been only getting about 22 mpg on the freeway. I took it to a mechanic to get it to pass DEQ and he said it was a problem with the pump or regulator. I checked the charcol filter valve, its ok; and I wanted to check the pressure regulator but the method for testing shown in my Bentley manual is based on the pressure from the Cold start valve, and my 87 doesn't have a cold start injector (from what I understand). Is there another way to test?

Now that I think about it I should probably try testing the fuel pump, duh[8], but still I'm interested in what you guys think.
thanks in advance

yesterday I checked the voltage from the O2 sensor and it wasn't fulctuating like it is suppose to, the car was definitley warm so I don't think that was the cause of the error. But I checked the voltage coming from the O2 heater unit and I got nothing, there is voltage going to the relay so I think I need a new relay, or there is a discontinuity between the relay and the sensor.

But then on my way to work this morning about 3 minutes into my drive my check engine light came on and I tried several times to count the fault code but when I turn the ignition to the 'on' position the light just stays on, never blinks. What would cause this???

It seems to run fine, except for the original gas smell problem. At the moment it idles really low, but that is because I had unpluged the engine control unit to do a couple of the voltage tests and it reset. the same thing happens when ever I unplug the battery, after about 20 miles or so it readjusts so I don't think that is my problem but I thought I would mention it anyway.
Any Ideas?
Thanks I really appreciate the help

Ok, so I got the fault codes first a 1 then 2 and 6 and 4 blinks.
This seems all too sudden could something have happened when I was doing voltage tests from the engine control unit under the glove box??
engine runs fine just slightly poorer gas mileage if anything
what do you guys think?????
I know I followed the test proceedure just as in my manual
could I have fried my ecu?
