fuses & Starter Motor battery problems

doing some repairs on my car, had a friend over who does this all the time to help get things done faster... he puts the battery in backwards without paying attention and connects the battery, flash and battery smokes a little... learning from his sudden mistake he puts the battery in correctly and we turn on the car, everything else turns on perfectly but the engine doesnt turn over... we look in the service manual and according to electrical diagrams the starter motor and alternator, both on the same circuit, are directly connected to the battery, however in a more basic diagram, there's a fusible link between the battery and the starter motor...

anyone want to clear this up? he's going to pay for it in any case, but wondering if the starter motor & alternator need to be replaced or if the fusible link is the only thing needed to be replaced

Fusible Link

I had a similar issue with my 95 525i. When the fusible link burns out the rest of electrical will act normal but the starter does not get power. The fusible link is a protection measure designed to go out. The fusible link is in easy location on mine(beside the battery tray). Good Luck on yours.
